The annual Galax Leaf and String festival presents famous authors and musicians each June. This year, a famous artist – our own P. Buckley Moss – will delight festival goers with a personal appearance and the release of her poster commemorating "The Crooked Road – Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail". The poster and a limited edition print will be released during the festival and Pat will be available to personally sign each piece purchased by collectors and fans.
The sounds of music beat strong and pure in Virginia, especially in the Southwest Blue Ridge Highlands and Heart of Appalachia regions connected by "The Crooked Road". Day and night, the plaintive strains of mountain ballads and toe-tapping, old-timey dance music echo from porches and stages across this region’s sharp ridges and deep valleys. This hauntingly beautiful area, bounded by the Blue Ridge, Allegheny, and Cumberland mountains nurtured the musical sounds and sensibilities of mountain music for decades. But, the landscape is only the beginning. The true treasure lies in the enchanting experience of this authentic mountain culture and musical heritage.
Pat has perfectly captured the essence of "The Crooked Road" in her painting of a local log cabin playing host to a group of musicians jamming just off the front porch. The setting is a scene you’d expect to drive upon at numerous locations along The Crooked Road – the tiny ribbon of winding mountain highway that begins where the Piedmont plateau meets the hazy blue of the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
It seems fitting that Pat’s Crooked Road poster and print will be released in Galax, one of eight major venues along the trail. Officially named the "World Capital of Old Time Mountain Music" by the Virginia Legislature, Galax embraces its traditional music with a passion. Home to The Historic Rex Theater, the annual Old Fiddler’s Convention, and the nearby Blue Ridge Music Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Galax is Virginia’s true heart of mountain music.
